Product Description

The Z1 Catback Touring Exhaust for the Infiniti G35 Coupe is part of our new line of premium exhaust systems for Nissan and Infiniti sports cars. Keeping true to our core principles, our focus was to create an exhaust system that performed exceptionally without sacrificing exhaust volume or tonal quality. We find this exhaust is best suited for enthusiasts that want an exhaust with great power potential, but wish to maintain an "adult" appearance and sound.

The Construction

This exhaust is crafted from 304 stainless steel and tig-welded to perfection. It was designed and engineered with principles identical to our Z1 Modular Y-Pipe, putting sound and build quality first. Behind the y-pipe, cast stainless steel flanges are welded to 3'' stainless steel piping, feeding a single resonator. The resonator reduces unwanted rasp and drone to help the system produce a clean exhaust note. From there, piping leads to a 3'' cast exhaust splitter, providing maximum flow as exhaust gasses expand into the mufflers. Welded directly to the outlets of the splitter, you'll find the heart of the exhaust system: the dual 11'' oval mufflers. These high-flow mufflers feature an inner layer of stainless-steel packing and an outer layer of fiberglass held in place by a perforated stainless-steel core. Rather than using baffle plates and resonance chambers which negatively affect power, our mufflers use a full-length perforated tube, allowing exhaust gasses to flow through the muffler unobstructed. As gasses pass through the muffler, the exhaust sound is dampened through the dual-layer packing, reducing exhaust volume while maintaining an appropriate exhaust tone. Each muffler has a brushed finish and includes a finely crafted 4.5'' stainless steel exhaust tip, with your choice of finish!

TL;DR: Good, but compromised. Also, get the double-wall tips; they look much better than single IMO, and I'm fairly certain they help drone/volume a small bit. Pros: Impeccable quality. The welds are beautiful, the steel is thick, and everything goes together so well. The sound is great; it wails without being a trumpet like many single exhausts on the VQ, and is a very clean/pure sound. It's refined in tone/volume even with HFC/other breather mods, although it does vibrate a little bit (I'll be adding vibration dampers this week and will report back if they help). Having a full suite of hardware AND extras is a fantastic touch as well. It also sits higher than my previous HKS true-dual; much less worry about speed bumps and bumps. Cons: The passenger-muffler mounting needs a SERIOUS re-design. It WILL contact the shield over the evap canister, so you'll need to remove it or hammer it. This could be avoided by simply re-locating where the hanger mounts on the muffler to be more towards the rear by an inch or so; dunno how Z1 missed that, but my guess is that it's adapted from the 350Z version which doesn't have that canister there. Additionally, it drones HARD with high flow cats, even resonated ones AND the resonated Y-Pipe; ~1800-2400rpm after it's warmed up is BRUTAL (but I also only have about 400 miles on it, so maybe it calms down later?). Hoping adding mass will help tone that down. I also wish they were able to make it fit with their own Z1 Rear Tie Bar, but there's only so much room back there. Neutral: Not a huge fan of the tip adjustment system. While I get the intention, it makes aligning them/making them secure super annoying, as you have two different adjustment points to tighten (with FI RHFC, to make the tips fit well in the bumper has them more recessed than you would think, meaning the actual pipe protrudes decently into the tip). I can also feel exhaust air escaping between the muffler and the exit pipe, and that thing is clamped down hard. Overall it's a quality item (if a bit pricey), and you can work around the flaws with some elbow grease.

Pros: Super high quality exhaust. The welds are thick and clean, the pipe is well made, everything lines up as it should. It's definitely a premium product. In addition, having extra hardware is super nice just in case for the future. With the resonated y-pipe (and in my case with resonated high flow cats) it has a super "pure" sound, with zero rasp to speak of. The infamous VQ hiss when the revs fall is not present, which in my experience is when you have narrower exhaust/ restrictions. Volume is definitely on the louder side (again, high flow cats on the car), but I'd rate it as only slightly louder than my old HKS exhaust, as well as a bit louder than my old Tanabe Medallion setup (considering that that one had an actual traditional muffler, it is pretty impressive what Z1 has done here). Overall, super quality piece that is worth every dollar. Cons: I don't know what Z1 was thinking with the muffler mount on the passenger side. It absolutely will interfere with the metal shield /heat shield in the area, and it could have been completely avoided with the hanger being bent slightly more and welded further back on the muffler. As is, I had to spend a decent amount of time with a hammer and test fitting things. Thank goodness the mid pipe has a clamp that allows for some wiggling, as otherwise you'd have to completely remove the shield and exposing the canister. That said, my FI RHFC could be slightly shorter, causing the issue, but I've seen this fitment problem reported on cars with stock cats. In addition, with resonated high flow cats, it does have a decent amount of drone between 1800rpm-2400rpm, between 80-100Hz; I'm willing to bet that with stock cats, it is absolutely fine. Maybe the y-pipe resonator could be slightly wider to help with that? The tip fitment system is also both awesome and not. It allows for a perfect fit, but I'm paranoid that daily commuting on bumpy roads will eventually shake them loose; time will tell. Overall, it's a bit pricey but a very nice item. Just wish Z1 had put more thought into the passenger side hanger.

As a 43 year old the loud raspy exhaust most all kits give the VQs is annoying to me. This kit very much hit the mark with the Adult tone. I paired it with the also resonated z1 y pipe. It's a little louder than stock and zero rasp or drone. I still have the non resonated z1 y pipe and may swap to see the difference. Thanks for making this product.
